There should be more old Geezers!!
Subject: Old Geezers

"Geezers" are easy to spot; this is slang for an old man.
But, at sporting events, during the playing of the National Anthem, they hold their caps over their hearts and sing without embarrassment.
They know the words  and believe in them.
They remember World War I, the Depression, World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy and Hitler.
They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age, the Moon Landing, and the debacle in Vietnam.

If you bump into a "Geezer" on the sidewalk, he'll apologize.
Pass a Geezer on the street, he'll nod, or tip his cap to a lady.

"Geezers" trust strangers and are courtly to women.
They hold the door for the next person and always when walking, make sure the lady is on the inside for protection.
"Geezers" get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like violence and filth on TV and in movies.
"Geezers" have moral courage.
"Geezers" seldom brag unless it's about the grandchildren in Little League or music recitals.

This country needs "Geezers" with their decent values and common sense.
We need them now more than ever.
It's the "Geezers" who know our great country is protected, not by politicians or police, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country in foreign lands, just as they did, without a thought except to do a good job, the best you can, and to get home to loved ones.

Thank God for "OLD GEEZERS."

Nice piece, I hope it inspires others to tell their tales.

I would like to have a dollar for every time since 1999 that I received EOBs from United Healthcare saying a claim has been rejected because coverage was terminated and was not in effect at time of service.  Seems that UHC gets a lot of bad data tapes from CBS Human Services.  This means contacting Human Services and confirming that coverage should be in effect..then contacting UHC to ask them to reprocess after the CBS confirmation comes through.  A real pain! But no pain is a big as the CBS refusal to cover any part of my two daughters aged 10 and 11 who HAD BEEN covered while a was a CBS empolyee but on layoff and then quick retirement CBS decided I would have to pay full price for their coverage.

So re your problem with UHC..you are not alone!   Best  Tony Brunton ex CBS News Radio.

How It Happened

God populated the earth with broccoli and cauliflower and spinach, green and yellow vegetable of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

And Satan created McDonald's.
And McDonald's brought forth the 99-cent double-cheeseburger.
And Satan said to Man, "You want fries with that?"
And Man said, "Supersize them." And Man gained pounds.

And God created the healthful yogurt, that woman might keep her figure that man found so fair.
And Satan brought forth chocolate.
And woman gained pounds.

And God said, "Try my crispy fresh salad."

And Satan brought forth ice cream.
And woman gained pounds.

And God said, "I have sent your heart healthy vegetables and olive oil with which to cook them."

And Satan brought forth chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter.
And Man gained pounds and his bad cholesterol went through the roof.

And God brought forth running shoes and Man resolved to lose those extra pounds.

And Satan brought forth cable TV with remote control so Man would not have to toil to change channels between ESPN and ESPN2.
And Man gained pounds.
And God said, "You're running up the score, Devil."
And God brought forth the potato, a vegetable naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition.
And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fat fried them.
And he created sour cream dip also.
And Man clutched his remote control and ate the potato chips swaddled in cholesterol.
And Satan saw and said, "It is good."
And Man went into cardiac arrest.
And God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery and gastric bypass surgery.
And Satan created HMO's.

And the one upsmanship continues...

CBS Human Resources: I found some help here but had to go to the top.  Called Anthony Ambrose, VP of Human Resources, but he was on holiday.  However, his assistant Ron Terrano returned my call and was promptly the day of my complaint and also called several days later (over weekend) and advised me that they corrected the problem and were reprocessing my claim.

High Mark: I really don't understand what they are doing in the picture except that they are a carry over from the Westinghouse purchase.  These people are supposed to be the keeper of the retirees records.  To be truthful, IMHO , their main purpose is to just collect money from either a pension deduction or see that monthly checks are sent in.  In theory this is where the eligibility is established.  And when eligibility is found valid the information is sent to "Bambi"

United Health Care:  This outfit must be shown in THREE PARTS.

Atlanta, Ga.    This is the address of where medical claims are sent for processing.  Check the back of your id card

Pittsburgh, Pa. This is the phone number on the top of an EOB form.  This is where the phone answerers are located and have a menu of standard answers to your question.  eg. "I will have High Mark fax that information over."  "the tape is updated every Month, day, quarter, (depends on where the phone answerer looks)"  "the supervisor is away from his/her desk"

"Bambi": located somewhere in Connecticut.  Phone answerers in Pittsburgh are unable to communicate directly with this person.  "Bambi" is the person who updates the tapes which periodically are used to update the system.  Seems to me that the use of updating tapes in this fashion is quite archaic.  "Bambi" gets her information from High Mark, and to listen to the phone answerers in Pitt. you would get the feeling that "Bambi" is located in a bunker similar to the Defense bunker in Colorado.

Note that this is a flow chart that works in one direction only.  If for some reason the tapes are wrong, you must go back to the start point (CBS Human Resources).  That seems to me to be the real glitch in the system concerning the termination of coverage.

HELLO OUT THERE! Central computers with large data bases work just fine.

Did we have these problems when Pat Kinney was around?

From Tony Cucurullo

Les,
Many of the military types at CBS have called to remind me that the photo #359, Cucurullo & Admiral Howard.
He, (Adm. Howard) is not an Admiral.
Let, me explain; when a senior officer, (he is wearing Captains bars, a Colonel equivalent in the Army) is promoted as Admiral elect, or General elect, he entitled to be called Commodore, or as in the case of the Army, Brigadier General.

Captain, Michael Howard, is a one star Admiral by "elect."  He is now reassigned to the Pentagon, as Chief of Special Warfare.

With any kind of luck he will be permanently established as a Rank (star) Officer soon.

His background is exceptional and as you can see a many times decorated officer (Vietnam).

I am proud to know him, and those astonishingly trained men.

One more note, to this. When you become a vacation relief supervisor at CBS, you are in effect a, "supervisor elect."  Or sycophant supreme.

Having just returned from a visit to see my daughter after her final Chemo treatment. It breaks your heart to see your child, (even though she is 45, and a nurse, yes she is my child..always) suffer the physical degradation of a once vibrant and beautiful lady. She is so weak. She now faces 6 weeks of radiation. I want to thank all of you that offered us hope, and those that sent prayers, it truly helps, when all you have is hope and faith.

The unknown, is a humbling experience. Though, even with the knowledge of the medical profession, they too are working in only an educated state.  But, you play the cards that are dealt to you, and hope.

Thank you one and all,

I read the following news item, and I find it interesting.  As a former New Yorker, I like the NY papers. I am a sports buff. I like the Daily News, for ‘Sports’.  Here in Virginia, the folks are laid-back. Their music is mostly FM Country.  Whenever I return home, I bring most of the NY papers. They are like magazines, to me.
I have a saying, “When you are out of NY, you are out of town”

Perhaps you have a list of music favorites?  Would you care to share them with me?
See you on the web page.

Dear Les,
Got your note and it's good to hear how old friends are getting along.  I have spent over 219.67 on Florida maps but still can't find St. James City!!
In truth, Dave Graham, me, and our spooses boated down the St. James River 2 years ago.  We must have past you, without knowing.  Anyway, keep up the great
computer work and good luck in your move to town.
Please keep in touch, but we use:

                              Love,
                        Handsome Howie P.

[Les] Howard, I think I recall that you converted all of your retirement and investment monies into shekels.  So I must assume that for you to use these coins you must get your maps from Tel Aviv.  As you know, all of their maps of Florida show only the area between the Atlantic Coastline and Interstate 95.  Now, us rednecks maps only show the area from the Gulf of Mexico to Interstate 95.  Our monetary unit is either gator tail or grouper fingers.  Try looking at the southern tip of Pine Island between Sanibel and Ft. Myers/Cape Coral.  There be a St. James Creek but no St. James River here.

[Les]  The place you referred to in your last posting was "Rocco's", located in the middle of the block on 10th Ave. between 56th and 57th.  They were a great supporter of Local 1212 during the 1972 Labor Strike.   Jim Martens and Paul Buda would drive there daily and pick up Urns of coffee and goodies to drive around to the various picket sites.  Great hot and sweet Italian sausage with marinara sauce hero sandwiches, also a "Giacomo" that was much greater than any Philly Cheese Steak.  Can't find that good stuff here in SW Fla., and if I did, couldn't eat it anyway.

From Tony Cucurullo

Labor Day has come and gone...once again.
CBS, was not a place of labor, but a love of labor. If you didn't enjoy your time at CBS then it was,"just a job" for you. To the rest of us we were contributing to the growth of the best communication business in the greatest country.

The union had a rapport with the company. When Mr. Gene Jankowski was the President, he would go to St. Patrick's and hear mass and receive communion with the members of Local 1212.

Labor relations progressed considerably under his aegis. And so did the profits of the company. We started the decline when the "Barracuda of Wall Street" came and chomped up the most balanced corporation in the world.

He made money for himself and then sold the remainder of the corpus to the money grabbers. Ah, but enough about that leech.

I think about the quality of the men that represented the working technical staff.
I have written about Pat Finn before, but one can't say enough good about the smiling Irishman. He was my mentor and my friend. He set the tone for the character of the executive board members.
Although, men as Jerry Sullivan, who with his quite good council increased the image of the union with his no-nonsense, and strict accountability, for all union actions.

Jim McCarthy, has to be everyone's hero, he looked the part and was highly respected as a cameraman, and a staunch union man too, but eminently fair to both.

Elliot Greenblatt, represented his group with the fervor of an Israeli freedom fighter. Always upfront with his opinions.

Frank Marth, stands alone as the complete union rep. Nothing gets past Frank. You explain all the expenditures or it didn't pass with his signature on it. Mike, DeIeso, called Frank, the "Bull Dog" of the board. If the union wanted to rent cars for an event he suggested using public transportation. He would use it to set the examples.  "Quite-a-guy."

Over the years, we had many great technicians from the rank and file of CBS that brought the bacon home to the people at the plant. On a rare occasion we would get a "cruller" in the group. They were weeded out pronto.

When I try to remember all the names I hope I don't leave out some of the great ones. Did you know that most of the original board members went on to become company officers.

Sather, Lyons, Camillo, Mercier, Giriat, DeLilla, Naeder, Filippi, McBride, Pile, Mellow, Meyers, King, Bartillucci, Korff, DeIeso, Lundholm, Greenwald.

The above people along with the CBS management people set the wages that carried us along to a career in the broadcast and television business, and for that I personally thank them for their efforts.

But, it was your talent and creativeness that made this  pioneer industry into the giant form of communication between peoples all over the world. You can consider yourselves the "Gutenberg's" of the electron world.

Happy Labor Day, Yaw'll.               Tony C

From Fred Dansereau

In the Sept issue of "Smart Money" magazine there is a short article about Rep John Tierney of Mass about losing promised health benefits after retirement. In short "it's the ultimate bait and switch".
Rep J. T. wants to prohibit postretirement cuts in health benefits and require that health plans be RESTORED. He needs enough co-sponsors to conduct hearings. He notes that people gave up a portion of their wages to get health care coverage that would carry them through retirement. "I'm sure it was part of the negotiations that they would have so much in cash and some in benefits, and now the end of the bargain goes right out the window."
I would urge all members of our retirement group to contact their local House of Representative member to urge him to join Rep Tierney and to pass legislation to restore the promise that CBS made to us. Contact your Rep., the AARP, your local Democratic  and Republican committees and local newspapers.

Sincerely, Fred Dansereau

Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-VA-1st)

1123 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Madam, Rep. Jo Ann Davis,

In an article in the "Smart Money," magazine (September issue) Rep.
John F. Tierney, Massachusetts, 6th District, summed up his article on
the,"promised health benefits after retirement....." with, "it's the ultimate
bait and switch."

This too, is the general feeling of the former employees of CBS. They were always a family oriented company and the employees placed considerable trust in the, "good will and faith" in their negotiations in the prior years.

However, in the succeeding years when most of the employees accepted the,"good faith," offer to retire with a sum of money, and the continued
medical plan that existed at the time of separation from the company.

Under the guise of, "New Management," we are now facing a deterioration of that commitment.

It is our position now that we would not have consented to that offer and, we wish to be RESTORED to the status on the day we left the company.

I sincerely hope that you will consult with Rep. John F. Tierney, and act in concert with him to enact legislation that would restore to CBS the programs as I have stated, then perhaps this will be accepted as the civil rights of all citizens that labor in good faith with the promise of a secure
retirement with benefits that are lasting.

I thank you for your consideration in this matter, you promised to represent the working people, you now have an ally in Rep. Tierney.

Respectfully yours,

Anthony L. Cucurullo

From Lee Levy

Under the guise of, "New Management," we are now facing a deterioration of that commitment.

SHOULD READ:

Under the guise of, "New Management." the Company has reneged on it's promises which we accepted in good faith.  The sell out was now complete and those employees that built this company, were sold out to the bottom line.

From Fred Dansereau

The article I referred to is in the Sept issue of SmartMoney magazine in the section called The Agenda, page 63.
Also read "Detroits Delemma" on page 55. This article sounds like a plant and that GM is ready to bomb it's retirees like the little tailor and the CBS/Westinghouse has done to us.
Thanks for the government list, I hope we can do something. At least we are trying.

Fred

Web Company Offers Drugs in U.S. at Canadian Prices

By William Langbein

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A Canadian Internet company plans to launch a new service in January that will enable Americans to buy prescription drugs from Canada at savings of 40% to 70%.

The move by Online Direct, Online Direct Inc., a 2-year-old company formed through the consolidation of three Canadian Internet companies, comes just weeks after the US House of Representatives passed a bill that would allow Americans to buy prescription drugs directly from foreign countries. The bill has yet to be approved by the Senate and the president.

Earlier this week, Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) said that he would introduce legislation to let Americans obtain lower priced prescription drugs from Canada because the US government refuses to implement the Medicine Equity and Drug Safety Act law passed last year.

The law permitted US pharmacists and drug wholesalers to re-import US-approved drugs from other countries and sell them at a discount. But both the Clinton and Bush administrations refused to implement the law, citing safety concerns. Supporters of the re-importation plan believe both administrations backed down under pressure from the pharmaceutical industry.

Dorgan's bill and the new service by Online Direct confronts the safety issue by offering prescription drugs from Canada. David Cravit, CEO of Online Direct, told Reuters Health that the combination of lower prescription drug prices in Canada and a favorable exchange rate should entice Americans to use the service if either legislative bill becomes law.

A recent Money magazine survey reported that more than 60% of Americans said that they would drive into Canada to buy prescription drugs if they lived close enough. With the Online Direct service, Cravit said, everyone in the US could save money on prescription drugs.

The new online pharmacy service will be promoted and managed by Traverse City, Michigan-based Wellness Web, an Online Direct subsidiary. Wellness Web will post which prescriptions are available to be filled, and patients will be able to contact the subsidiary through the Internet, e-mail, fax or phone.

After initial contact with Wellness Web, patients will have to supply a hard copy of a current prescription that will be sent to LePharmacy.com in Montreal. Cravit said that a Canadian physician would then review the prescription, make contact with a US doctor if necessary, and reissue a new Canadian prescription.

LePharmacy.com would then manage distribution of the prescription directly to the patient in America.

To initiate the program, Online Direct Friday acquired exclusive worldwide distribution rights to the LePharmacy.com pharmacy system.

Mark Lazar, chairman of LePharmacy.com, said in a statement that an average person who requires a continuing supply of a prescription drug could save $1,000 to $2,000 a year compared with the price the individual would pay in the US.

Online Direct forecast $7 million (US) in first year sales, rising to more than $15 million in the second year.

to follow up on Joel, I went to see him today and considering his terrible loss, found him in fairly good spirits. He is very eager to make contact with all his good friends in our group and asked me to find out how he could "join". I gave him the e-mail address and I am sure he will contact you soon.  He is still at the Broadcast Center, but of course there are no soaps originating from there. He did not want to join the news dept. so they have him report to Video Tape for views etc.  How our "CBS" has changed........I am glad I'm out of there, but it was a great 35 years        regards, John Wells

From Jay Chichon

To Harold Deppe:

And the answer to your question: "who said "Have a Happy" every night from Grand Central Studio #42"? is..... CARROL REED....the "weather girl" for WCBS-TV in the 1950's.  One night while she was doing the LIVE weather show.....the microphone on the end of the boom arm dropped off and was hanging just by the audio cable into the picture frame. She casually looked up and said "hi there" and continued the show without missing a beat. Carrol later married Ham Ohara...a CBS sound effects technician.

Now here is a question for Harold: (circa 1950) What is the name of the person who directed the "Snarky Parker" puppet show while lying on a couch in back of the control room at Grand Central....who later went on to become a famous Hollywood and Broadway actor?

Regards to all....Jay.

[Les] Jay, I know the answer to that one.  Even though I was still in High School in the early 1950's (just a child). YB

Normally I wait until the weekend before I would put together a page for the weekend.  But because of the tragic occurrences that happened yesterday I opened my email and decided to send them for posting.

Jackie and I heard from our son in California last evening of how close we were to having it touch us.  Our Daughter-in-law was at a seminar in Boston on Monday and scheduled to fly out on United Flight 177 that evening.  The seminar ran longer than expected and she expected to miss her flight to La., however, for the province of a higher power the flight to LA was delayed for 1 hour that and Joy was able to depart then.  The flight that she would have been rescheduled on was United flight 175.

It is a sad thing that what I feel we as a nation should do to retaliate to this despicable act are contrary to our constitution.  The constitution is the basis for our democracy and we must obey it.

Please feel free to send your thoughts and feelings to me so that I can post them to be shared by all.

I will save some of the items for a usual posting this weekend.

This is to let everyone know that I am OK after the terrible tragedy this morning.  It was horrible to watch it happen, but I am safe at work.

From Tony Cucurullo

Our web page refrains from religion and politics as issues for discussion, and wisely so.  Because we are a nation of decent people, and we don't want to offend the sensibilities of any group with divergent viewpoints.

With such a gentle approach to these matters, it therefore becomes an apparent weakness that is easily exploited by the self centered egomaniacs of the world at large.

The scum of the world looks down upon us as a weak society ready to be plucked and abused at will.

America has perpetuated this image to our advantage economically. However militarily we are considered weak and sissified because we place a value on human life and consider that the prime function of our existence.

In the recent wars that we participated in we take the "high road" and regard the enemy noble warriors that should be handled with humane treatment.  Terrorist know that, all that they have to declare upon being captured, is to state that they are indeed freedom fighters, and therefore should be treated as prisoners of war.

Look at the Blind terrorist that calls himself a religious leader and is now in jail for his attempt on the World Trade Center. His act was a heinous one, and that should have caused him to be executed. But, we coddle him, and them, even though they affirmed at the time of their arrest that the next time they would succeed in bringing down the Towers. Well, they did...didn't they?

However, did this dastardly deed, should be made an example to the world that terrorism will not be tolerated, and that a new and swift set of rules outside of the decency of democratic principles will be in effect and used upon terrorism.

We cannot turn the other cheek any longer. For those Americans that don't have the fortitude to exact this sort of barbaric revenge let them come forward and ask the victims or their survivors how they feel about retribution?

Twice in my lifetime I am a sitting witness to the horror of a Pearl Harbor attack. It would be a stain on the honor of all those that I witnessed die to retain the freedoms we cherish so dearly. And now to relinquish them again to cowards that kill nonmilitary targets. We will find the bastards, and I wonder if the Jane Fondas will crawl out of their holes of disgrace and appeal for clemency for the cowardly scum that they are.

It is true that I can speak of revenge, and know that because of my age I wont be a participant to the "Justice applied." I will let my record speak  for my anger at this atrocity.

I pray for all the souls that were sacrificed to make a point for this religion that requires suicidal attacks to get attention. I hope that the, 'GOD of all' can see a way to accept this devilish act and forgive them, because I can't find it in my heart to extend an ecumenical hand out to them, they should all rot in hell where they came from.

Regards,
Tony Cucurullo

From Gayle DePoli

Dear Tony,

Words can't express all the emotions of today's tragedy.  You so eloquently did your best to express all of our anger and rage.  Pray we must for all of those unsuspecting souls that were caught up in that carnage.  And pray for all of those left waiting for word of the loved ones that left for work on the early trains and buses and will never be seen again.

I'm afraid to say this really is the end of the world as we know it.  We are one of very few countries that you walk down the streets and don't see any military at all.  Don't see young soldiers with machine guns slung over their arms.  I don't know if our lives will ever be so free again.  I know this is the beginning of a war.  But with who?  We just bombed Kabul, Afghanistan for having the Taliban house Bin Laden, but he is so far underground in another country now and will live to terrorize another day.

This is our country's great time of need.  Not only Americans, but most countries around the globe have offered condolences and assistance.  I know I have heard from friends and relatives from six countries on three continents today.  There is a lot of praying going on at the moment for us worldwide.  But it is actually not just an act of terrorism on the USA.   It's an act of terrorism on the free, civilized world.  There are many multinational companies housed downtown.  And the consulates of many
foreign nations.

Fly our flag outside of your home, but more importantly go and donate blood.  It is needed desperately in NY's tri-state area and DC.  The Red Cross is getting the blood from everywhere to bring to NY.

Regards,
Gayle

Dear Tony:  I could not agree with you more about cowardly deeds of the terrorists, although I am astonished how the different attacks were planned and coordinated. Our own planners could not have done it any better especially considering their lack of billions budget and committees.  I have been glued to the TV since this morning and of course the coverage on TV was supreme. Later in the day it got even better when the networks received tapes from eyewitnesses and tourists. Much better pictures and action and mainly it made to feel that you were I the fleeing crowd!  If it wasn't for a weak ticker in my chest and gray hair, I would be ready to go into another war. The only thing I don't understand is the fact that this terror, hate and killing is based on respective religion.  And just the opposite what both Jesus and Mohamed preached. I guess they were not listening to their religious leaders.
Best regards Herman

Subject: One of the most surreal sights

To All of My Dear Friends,

If you haven't said your prayer to your higher power yet, please take the time to do so.  So many of us will be touched in the next days and weeks from the disaster at the World Trade Center.  All of Europe will have 3 minutes of silence tomorrow in mourning for all of those lost.

Looking out the couple of miles over Long Island Sound and seeing the emptiness where those two magnificent towers once stood, is heartbreaking to say the least. The lack of their presence is still so hard to believe.

Do whatever you can to help.  Donate blood, volunteer time or reach in your pockets.  Our world may never be the same again, but the one thing that this country always has in time of need is unity.

Here are some shots taken from the Black Hawk yesterday.  Sikorsky sent down (8) aircraft to the scene to assist yesterday...they flew over my house...the windows shook.  The sound of F-16's all day and even more helicopters tonight is very frightening.  Our beach is closed to the public because it is such a short distance across the water to lower Manhattan.  This will be another quick ferry to other hospitals if needed.

Lovingly,
Gayle

[Les] Please forgive me for not sending the photos, they are quite thought provoking and I don't think that our website has the capabilities of displaying a slide show, that is the file form in which I received them.  However, I do have them saved to my disk and if anyone would care to view them please request them from me.  I also have a second series of photos that are also in a slide show presentation that I would be glad to send.  These came from the Foley Corporation, marketers of Caterpillar Equipment.

This has got to be the best, and most uplifting statement about America I have ever heard, and it is from a Canadian. He has my respect, something that is difficult to earn.  This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes.  Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars! into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10?

If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.

You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon -! not once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, America!

This is one of the best editorials that I have ever read regarding the United States. It is nice that one man realizes it. I only wish that the rest of the world would realize it. We are always blamed for everything and never even get a thank you for the things we do.

I would hope that each of you would send this to as many people as you can and emphasize that they should send it to as many of their friends until this letter is sent to every person on the web. I am just a single Australian that has read this.

Certainly a trying time for America.  My understanding is that 3 IBEW techs are among the missing at the Trade Center.  They were on duty at the Channel 2 transmitter site and were working on the roof at the time of the first plane strike.

From Tony Cucurullo

When cataclysmic events of the past unfolded, they were recorded for posterity by eyewitness accounts at the time. Some were recorded in the bible. And we take that history on faith.

This horrific event at the World Trade Center was recorded for all to see by the eyes and ears of the television people. The reporters and the television cameramen (both male and female)

Spielburg, the eminent director of "Searching For Private Ryan" in his research for the films of the D-day invasion of Normandy beach in France, discovered that there was plenty of footage shot, but it was all lost when it was sent back to England for processing. And all that we all got to see was the same footage over and over again.

The courage of the cameramen is extraordinary. When you look the pictures taken from the WTC, you will notice that when the people start to run the camera stood pat and recorded the event that unfolded.

I heard one reporter exclaim that she didn't know where her cameraman was. I can only hope that he is OK, and that they just got separated.

Our industry can take pride in the people that ply their trade in this exacting and difficult, and very physically challenging profession. Of course they are backed up by a cadre of highly skilled technical maintenance and editing artist, and craftsmen.

So from the days of the 'quill and ink, through the film cameras, down to the advanced [to this date) television low-light-equipment. We become witnesses too, and emotional participants, in the current events, of the "rolling History" of life as in unfolds for all to view, judge, and absorb.

But, keep in mind, it isn't camera, but the cameraman, that sees the picture in story form that makes for the chronicling of the event.

So, one big hand salute to those daunting and brave ENG (Electronic News Gathering) brethren for their contribution to the history of the world.

And a prayer that they and all the people invloved with the tragic events are safe and healthy.
Regards.
Tony

From Tony Cucurullo

Do the terrorist have some sort of omnipotence, that allows them to believe in the life hereafter? Or perhaps, they are drugged, and preconditioned to accept death? Maybe their families are held hostage unless they perform these heinous acts?

I don't believe for a moment that any of these suggestions has merit. But, the mind screams for an answer to this perplexing question. What motivation can drive a person to death, and horribly too?

The blind obedience to the written word doesn't come with an irrevocable contract with positive conditions for a passage into another life form.

All religion is mystical and based entirely on faith. Granted that it is comforting to know that if you kill in the name of GOD then you are doing God's bidding. I believed it during WW 2, and the Korean conflict, and I still believe it to this day.

But, too the Japanese, had their banzai, the German's, had "Got MIT Us" on their banners. The Myans, had sun worshippers, and so forth. But, these icons of religion acceptance was the salve to soothe during combat and conflict, not once in recorded history is it stated that terrorism is guided by a mystical hand.

So, these miscreants, misfits, social aberrant, have established a new level of disdain. One would have to search the depths of the polluted areas of ones mind to come up with an expletive to describe their act of blatant cowardice.

They have assigned themselves to the pantheon of scum, along with the devils disciples, Hitler, Stalin, Nero, and Judas, and the unforgiven in hell.

My rage can't be sated by prayer, forgive me.

Les,

Thanks for the messages.  Very interesting material.

I know the WCBS transmitter was up there, but is it staffed or did we lose any CBSers in the attack?  I guess for the first time, I am in real favor of unmanned transmitters!  I had an UHF rig after leaving CBS which we ran under remote control full-time, but we did have a transmitter supervisor their daily to check it out.

I can't really believe that this has occurred!

Hope the move is going well!

I just got off the phone with Joe Duenas of CBS TX and Lisa Shah of WCBS Master Control.  WCBS was the only local NY TV station on the air for 3 days...They had an automatic switchover to the transmitter at the Empire State Building.  NBC local is on the air as of this day but per Joe their signal is very weak.

The sad news is that 2 IBEW people were working at the WTC on the Tragic day.
Joe and Lisa gave me the name off the two.

Isais Rivera who joined WCBS during 1985
Bob Pattison who came from Boston and joined WCBS as a 4-03 tech about 1 and 1/2 year ago.

They are among the missing, but to the best of my knowledge they were working on the roof of the WTC.

I did not know either of these 2 individuals but our prayers go out to them and their families.

From Joe Zink

Thanks for the info. My son-in-law, who works over at the CBS News Archives on 57th had asked if I knew them. I did not, since they came in after I had “retired”. As hindsight, you would have thought the other local stations might have learned after the 1993 truck bombing at the WTC left them off the air and CBS was able to switch over to the Empire State alternate transmitter and again was on the air while they were not. The old saying applies---don’t put all your eggs in one basket. I have to tell you that once again a tremendous amount of homes and business establishments are proudly flying Old Glory. Haven’t experienced that since the Gulf War. I, for one always fly our flag every day and am proud to do so. It unifies us as nothing else can.

GOD, yes GOD, bless America and let no Supreme Court ruling say otherwise.    Joe Zink

From Ron Wright

I knew them both....Isaias worked for me for a brief time, he came from the video tape library, he became a tech but could not really cut it with WCBS so they sent him to the xmtr.  He was a hero during the bombing of the WTC in 95 and was presented an award buy his community,,,,,when I saw the tower fall on Tuesday I just knew that we lost people and guessed that one would be Isaias.....today I made and I am wearing a tee shirt  with an American flag  that says  "Show them our Rockets Red Glare, Georgie Boy!"  My heart is saddened, I knew others who were  lost.

thanks for you reply.  We all pray for them...Lee

Les,

Isaias Rivera was the tech on duty when the WTC was first bombed in 1993 and stayed with the transmitter and kept WCBS on the Air then.  He was a very loyal and dedicated employee to CBS and this is a very sad ending.  I understand there were some people from E&D who were working on the new HDTV installation also at the time.  Harold Schutzman is hoping to find out over the weekend.

Again, Les, THANKS!                Lyn

From Tony Cucurullo

Les, perhaps you can forward this to your master list?

Isais Rivera who joined WCBS during 1985
Bob Pattison who came from Boston
These technicians worked at the transmitter on the WTC.
Are missing and presumed dead.

These are CBS people. Members of the greatest corporate family.

If they are indeed victims of this horrific crime against humanity, them we (CBS members past and present) owe them a final memorial.

I will kick start a fund ($100.) to get this memorial or fund going.

I suggest that we (all of our CBS family) send what ever you can to this fund.

I recommend that Fred Schutz, be Chairman of the fund, and that George Seelinger, who still works at CBS, and is also the Treasurer of Local 1212, IBEW, be the in-the-plant sponsor.
I further hope that the Union address the Executive Board and ask that they make a contribution for these young members.
Let us all show in what ever way that comes to your heart the warmth and generosity of CBS.

Regards,    Tony C.

Hi Tony

I think your idea of a fund for our late, 2 CBS members , Isais Rivera and Bob Pattison  would be a fine tribute...

I didn't know either of them but my heart goes out to their families...

When I  saw the fire below the transmitter site my first thought was for our technicians  on duty..I knew right away with the heavy smoke and the fire that there was little chance of them getting out alive....

I would be honored to support the fund in any way...... and I  would like to match your kick off contribution of $100...

I just  completed  the mailing for our upcoming luncheon but I sure we can get the message through via the web site and "E" mail...

[Les] I also will contribute to this fund, however, 2 points need clarification:  Where to send the checks and also read Lyn Heiges last entry above and lets be sure to include the others if necessary.

And now that the initial rage is banked somewhat and prudence is rearing it's quieting effect. I think it is time too evaluate the situation.

We as Citizens have the undeniable right to express rage and require our government to act as a big brother and go punch the other guy out. However, the other guy might be bigger as in 200 million religious, ready to die for their GOD, bigger.

So, I think again,..... that we who only react to HEADLINES, and are not privy to INTELLIGENCE, ......(I have reservation about that word being used for spying, their intelligence can be questioned so often, but...) at any rate, we do not have what is available to make prudent judgments about retaliations and retributions.

War is anathema! That's a given. So, what are the alternatives open to us.
We can appeal to the common sense of the individuals, but, that is useless.
We can appeal to the governments that foster these terrorists. They might react minimally on the surface, just for the benefit of the world at large.

I feel that we must apply our own brand of justice to this situation and let the world see Democracy in action. We did this the last time, that the Trade Center was bombed. We imprisoned the culprits. It ended there.

We need to take it a step further, and hold the host nation to a World Court Decision. With the prospect of embargoes and other financial sanctions.

If that isn't enough, then an application of military pressure, as in Bosnia, could be used.

These are very basic thoughts, but, they are surface remedies instead of a Jihad, that could produce Nuclear holocaust tragedies.

Let, the professionals do their thing, and keep the faith and offer support to this President, for he is all we have in this tragic time.
Remember, one of the greatest Presidents in our history, started as a haberdasher, and made the momentous decisions in history, President Harry Truman.

God, be with and guide, George Bush, and our congress and military. And pray for a semblance of peace.
Tony C.

From Bob Vernum

Les,

Here on the west coast although removed from the tragedy by 3,000 miles we are not really apart from the reality. I find it sad to recollect the memories of the world trade center---back in the late 1970s I had an airplane based at Teterboro, my-favorite short flight was  down the Hudson to the Verrazano Bridge, then a 180 back to the George Washington Bridge.
The real beauty of the flight was flying at the mandatory altitude of 1,100 feet---LOWER than the WTC, looking UP at it was really impressive, in those years I took many techs on that flight it was always a treat.
I often wondered if any of those thousands of people saw me rock my wings as I passed--I hope they did. To know that so many innocent people died in that devastating  event makes me wish I could have been there Tuesday morning to say goodbye. Stand by your president!
GOD BLESS AMERICA----we shall prevail.    Bob

For those of you who are interested, you can e-mail your representative directly on their web page. If you don't get a return e-mail, then use the old "quill & ink" method. Did Nostradamus really predict New York attack?

By Geert De Clercq

SINGAPORE, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Internet chat rooms are abuzz with talk that 16th century French astrologer Nostradamus forecast the attack on the World Trade Center in New York.

Thousands of people have received e-mails containing this prophecy, often with a second part forecasting that the attack on the twin towers will mark the beginning of World War III.

Several versions are doing the rounds. This is one of them:

"In the year of the new century and nine months
From the sky will come a great King of Terror
The sky will burn at forty-five degrees
Fire approaches the new city."

The text corresponds roughly to a verse in Nostradamus's Century (section) Six, Quatrain 97. Several books on Nostradamus have speculated that this quatrain's first line refers to September 2001, the ninth month in the first year of the new century, while the 45 degrees is interpreted as the latitude of the city of New York.

But New York lies just below 41 degrees latitude and Nostradamus's verse does not mention a great war, contrary to what several e-mails say. In many e-mails, the verse comes with a second part, which seems harder to link to Nostradamus:

"In the city of York there will be a great collapse
Two twin brothers torn apart by chaos
While the fortress falls the great leader will succumb
Third big war will begin when the big city is burning."

HOAXSTRADAMUS?

"(This second quatrain) is NOT by Nostradamus," read a statement on
www.nostradamus-repository.org  a Web site for Nostradamus study.

Hoax or not, various versions of the verse are being forwarded by the thousands every day.

"Initially, I was really skeptical, but I went to the web to look up something on (Nostradamus). Some prophecies have come true," Agnes Ng, a 23-year old Singaporean accountancy student, told Reuters on Thursday.

She received one of the prophecies in an e-mail from a friend. Before forwarding the message to her contacts, she posted a copy on Usenet newsgroup alt.prophecies.nostradamus. The e-mail she received was even more specific, forecasting that:

"The big war will begin when the big city is burning
on the 11th day of the 9th month that...
two metal birds would crash into two tall statues
in the new city and the world will end soon after."

One of the newsgroup contributors who goes by the e-mail moniker of "Justaguy" said this was a fake.

"It has been posted ad nauseam," he said.

Nostradamus prophecies surface after nearly every major news event. False or real, they struck a chord in Singapore.

Bookstore salespeople told Reuters there had been strong demand for books on Nostradamus since Tuesday's attacks.

The horrific event of 9/11 is worse than some of the places that I was in during combat in WWII and in Korea.  I photographed the mass of dead bodies of civilians that were murdered  by the Japanese military police in Manila and the dead  marines of the First Marine Division that the Chinese murdered in Korea.... but this monstrosity is beyond words.  I hope that we will be able to find all of these fanatics and execute them on the spot as we did with the SS in Germany.  No long trials, just a quick burst of fire.  I am mad, hurt, and sad all at the same time.  I have always backed my country and I am proud to see that there is a great movement forming to unite and do this job and do it right.

There was this Tower in Manhattan,
It was a foot short of touching heaven.

It was majestic, yet shamelessly plain,
That was it's proud beauty.

The windows could look out, but not in
That was because the spirit was on the inside
Like you and me.

The strength was built into it's bones of steel,
It's façade was mostly glass, to reflect the sun
On the adoring crowds.

The blood on the inside was the people,
that ran throughout
in organized chaos.

It had a twin, that kept an eye on the Lady in the Harbor.
And she showed her torch, that pointed to the them
As a friend, might do.

A while back, she had problem with a bomb,
But, the doctors of construction
Made her whole again

And now in this ignominious end, the tower and the twin
Lie in repose together
For one could not exist without the other.

Now there is just a tower of rubble,
And the Lady in the harbor
Has a tear in her eye.

President, Mr. Frank Viscup, and members ofthe Executive Board, as a former member of the Executive Board, I wish I could start this letter with a felicitous greeting and not from the saddest depths ofmy heart.
I do not need to remind you of the tragic events that befell the city and more sadly our local, when we lost two members of the CBS Transmitter department, at the top of one of the towers.
The CBS Retirees, under the Chairmanship of Fred Schultz a former member of CBS, and the local, has started a “MEMORIAL FUND” in the names of the two technicians that lost their lives tragically.
Although, we are retired and away from the industry, we regard those that ply their trade as members of a big  family, or fraternity if you will.
The loss of these two lives in such a wasteful manner, hits us deeply.

So, a call has gone out to all the retirees to contribute to the fund.

George Seelinger, who we regard as man with great integrity and verve. He has been asked to be an in-the-plant (CBS) representative to make a collection from all the remaining departments, and forward them to Fred Schutz.
I am now asking this “Board” if it can find it in their hearts to also contribute to this fund.
Additionally, would you consider asking those in the companies that you represent if they would be willing to take part and give,… As a sort of cathartic effort, to alleviate the feeling of not being able to, “do something positive.”

I know of the many times that the ‘Board’ contributed to appeals. I an aware that the ‘Board’ only contributes to causes that affect the local. Well this certainly qualifies.

So, please, try to see if you can help make this an industry effort, so that we can show, that we take care of our own.
If the board cannot vote a stipend, then perhaps you can individually make a gesture.
I thank you for your consideration in this matter. I would like to extend a warm greeting to those  members that I served with on the ‘Board’ for 28 of my 35 years at CBS.
Fraternally,
Tony Cucurullo

I have been reading and listening to all that has been said and all that has been written about the tragic, cowardice act perpetrated on the American people.

We have narrowed the list of responsible people, down to one crud, named Osama Bin Laden, and his blind cult of assassins.

What about his helpers? You know, the families of his followers, and his wealthy clan. They gave him the money to exist. But, not one of them has come forward and denounced him and his acts of terrorism.

Now, I just read from a person named Tamim Ansary. she writes about the plight of the poor people of Afghanistan. How, they are now oppressed by the Talibans.
Well, let the people of Afghanistan clean house before I can spare any mercy on anyone.

We go in and help anyone that asks for help, and they turn around and bite the hand that feeds them.
I just finished a book "The Black Hawk is Down." It is about the plight of the Somali people. They were starving and we sent them food. They repaid us by shooting down our helicopters, and killing our soldiers. The food went to the black marketeers

My sympathies lie with the Americans in this land. We keep giving, and we keep getting kicked in the ass for our efforts.
We send our money to them in many forms, but, they reject our way of life. We don't care to change their cultural ways. That is their choice. When they come to this country though we accept their lifestyles and add it to the melting pot.
That goes to make us stronger as a nation. Only the other countries can't see the success that we have had with this formula of acceptance of all the worlds children.

However, we won't tolerate the overthrow of our government, or our ideals. When you come to our shores, leave your hate, your disease, your ideology and come join the most successful country on the planet.

Write home to your folks, and tell them we are not the devil. We are not the fornicators of the world. We don't want war, because we value life and it's wonderful existence. But, if you are spoiling for a war, take off those bed sheets and reveal your weapons like a soldier. Clean up your act, train your troops, and then come-on and get your self killed. Because that's what we do the best. We, will lose some people, but we will defeat you. Take our dead home, and leave you in your devastation.

Stop, appealing to us to not make war. Get your country to obey the common laws of decency and live in the peaceful community, 'tutti mondo' with the rest of us.

George,
Since my phone call to you today, I was taken aback by the current history of CBS as it is now being written.
It certainly doesn't create the picture that we the CBS Retirees have imprinted in our reverie about the great company we left years ago.

So when I asked you to make a collection for two young men that perished in an impossibly horrendous way, I was almost sad to hear form you that the men and women of CBS-Today, might not have the spirit of family that is imbued into each and every retiree.

I must say, that I firmly believe that given a chance to show their mettle, I know that the people of CBS will come through. Even if they just show their solidarity as citizens of this great nation. and I can attest to the fact from actual experience in World War 2, and Korea, that Americans,.always  RISE to the occasion. They do not need a quid pro quo, or I give only if I get, in return, attitude.

These two employees that died, won't have an opportunity to grow in the company as you all will. Their families are now without their support...for life.

The retirees are on fixed incomes, and they have generously offered more than a stipend to this cause, even though most of us have never met or even knew their names before this horrific event took place.

I have never had too beg for any contribution,... the many..many times I appealed to the family of CBS for support, for an employee in need. It was always greeted with generosity.
PLEASE KEEP THAT SPIRIT ALIVE...NOW.

When I thought about asking someone to go around the comapny, and ask for contributions, I immediately thought of George Seelinger, because his integrity is the highest.

So, please on behalf of these families, let us show that we at CBS can take care of our own. Please, give, it is also cathartic to those of you that feel the need to give to be a part of this historical event.

I would also invite all of you to read and contribute to our WEB.  It was started to keep all the retirees together. Open up the site and read, and see the history unfold to you, that you may not know about these great pioneers that started the industry you now earn your living in.

Tony: I also received this article by Tamin (sent to me from California), so it must be in the hands of thousands. Although I agree with you about this "give and take" situation, this letter has some good points and should be carefully considered. The Russians have left only the poor and starving population. Get rid of thwe Taliban as well as Bin Laden. That must be the best solution. I am only afraid that we will get very little help or none at all. How can a Delta Task Force do it alone? A Viet Nam type war is impossible. Not only unpopular but the logistics are twice as long, three times as hard, costly and will result in too many casualties. I was going to send to you a copy of this article but as usual you are always a step ahead. Keep going!!! Herman

On occasion I have takes the Union (Local 1212) to task for policy differences. But, I have always felt a definite feeling of brotherhood and friendship for the officers of the union.
Peter Quaranta, has informed me that the; International Union, Local # 3 the largest local, (construction electricians), and Local 1212, that which represents the technicians of CBS and most of the local radio stations and TV outlets in the East coast, have offered a fund to be shared with all the IBEW members that were lost in the WTC.
The electricians to date have lost at lest 19 members, and Local 1212 has lost 4, two from CBS.

Peter has also told me that he heard that CBS is paying some of the funeral expenses, for the two employees lost in the CBS tower?

We, Fred Schutz and I feel that we will continue to appeal to all of you to contribute to the fund that will go to our CBS members. We cannot rely on the possible collection for them from others, we must give from our hearts, to our own.

PLEASE BECOME A PART OF THE RECOVERY EFFORT.
GIVE TO THE CBS FUND.
IT'S IS FROM OUR HEARTS...TO THEIR FAMILIES.
AFTER ALL, THAT IS ALL THEY WILL HAVE LEFT...THE MEMORIES THAT CBS, PAST AND PRESENT DID NOT FORGET THEM.

Regards,
Tony C.
